Planning to go camping with your dog? Camping with your furry friend can be so much fun – but if it’s your first time going on an adventure with your four-legged pal, we’ve got some tips to help you make the most of your upcoming trip.

Tip #1: Choose a Dog-Friendly Campground
Not all campgrounds allow pets, and some have specific rules about leashes, noise, and designated dog areas. It’s important to always check the campground’s pet policy before booking your site.
When choosing a campground, you may want to look for places that offer more open space, shaded areas, and access to dog-friendly hiking trails so that you have easy access to fun activities that are dog-friendly (and will help tire out of your pooch!)
Tip #2: Pack the Right Gear
Before any camping trip, you’ll want to plan ahead and ensure that you have everything you need not only for yourself, but also for your pup. Some camping essentials for dogs include:
- ✓ A sturdy leash and harness
- ✓ A collapsible food and water bowl
- ✓ Dog food and extra treats
- ✓ A comfortable bed or blanket
- ✓ Waste bags
- ✓ A pet first aid kit
- ✓ A travel crate or carrier
Making sure that you have all of these items will keep your pup comfortable and prepared for anything. In addition, if your pet is on any regular medications, make sure you bring those with you – when out camping, you might not have easy access to pet stores or veterinary clinics.
Tip #3: Keep Your Dog Safe From Wildlife
The great outdoors is full of exciting smells and sounds, but it’s also home to wildlife that could be dangerous. Always keep your dog on a leash and avoid leaving food out. Supervise them closely to prevent unwanted encounters with raccoons, snakes (like the Massassauga rattlesnake – the only venomous snake in Ontario), or larger animals.
If you are planning a camping trip in Ontario, there are great resources online that have both descriptions and photos of dangerous plants and animals to help you keep yourself and your pets safe. For example, this guide for the Rouge National Urban Park on the Government of Canada website lists common hazardous plants that visitors might come across.

Tip #4: Protect Against Fleas, Ticks, and Mosquitoes
Bugs love the woods, and unfortunately…they love dogs too. Before your upcoming camping trip, make sure that your dog is up to date on flea and tick prevention. You may also want to use a vet-approved insect repellent to reduce the risk of mosquito bites and tick-borne illnesses.
Ticks are becoming more common in Ontario as temperatures continue to rise during both the summer and winter. Many ticks now call Ontario home, including black legged ticks, which can spread diseases like lyme, and American dog ticks, which can spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever, among other diseases. Keep yourself – and your pets – protected from these dangerous diseases!
Tip #5: Stick to Your Dog’s Routine
Dogs are creatures of habit, and big changes to their daily schedule can leave them feeling anxious or unsettled. While camping, try to stick as closely as possible to your dog’s usual routine for feeding, bathroom breaks, walks, and even bedtime.
For example, if your pup usually eats breakfast every morning at 8 a.m and then goes for an evening walk, do your best to maintain that schedule outdoors. Doing this can help them feel more at ease and help them relax after a long day out.
It’s always best to bring along their regular food (instead of switching brands last-minute) to help prevent tummy troubles while on the road. If your pup takes medication or supplements, be sure to set reminders so you don’t miss a dose during the excitement of the trip.
Tip #6: Consider Where You’re Staying
Where you camp makes a big difference in your dog’s comfort. Although tent camping might work for some, choosing to travel in a trailer offers major advantages when on the go with pets. But which trailer is right for you?
Pretty much all trailers provide a secure, climate-controlled space where your dog can relax after a long day outdoors. This is especially helpful during hot afternoons, cold nights, or rainy weather, when a tent might not keep your pup as comfortable. If your dog is not a big fan of the heat or a breed that tends to struggle during hot weather, a trailer with climate control or AC can better accommodate their needs.
Trailers also give you more room to safely store pet essentials like food, water, toys, and bedding, so everything your dog needs is organized and within reach. You might want to choose a trailer that has a bit of extra storage or an additional sleeping space for your pup, especially if you have a big dog. For many dogs (and people), a trailer becomes a "home away from home,” making camping easier, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone.

Tip #7: Practice Leave No Trace With Your Dog
When camping alone, with family or with your pets, you should always practice the "leave no trace rule.” Respect nature and other campers by cleaning up after your pet and always packing waste bags to make sure you won’t be stuck in a sticky (and smelly) situation while on a hike.
While camping, curious pups might want to play with wildlife or chew on trees or bushes. It’s important to make sure your dog doesn’t damage plants or disturb wildlife. Following Leave No Trace principles ensures a safe and enjoyable camping experience for everyone.
